Looking for a hot medieval property to stage your own “Game of Thrones”? You won’t have to travel the plains of Westeros to find such a keep, but rather the blue grass of Kentucky, where this fortified castle lists for the Lannister price of $30 million.
Occupying 55 acres in Versailles, KY, the baronial fortress has been primarily used as an event facility but still presents itself as a formidable stronghold for any king-in-training. Lined in solid stone, the castle comes lined in soaring conical spires and battlements perfect for guarding the outer wall against an onslaught of enemy invaders.
Inside, the castle is prime for entertaining families of the Seven Kingdoms. Of its 50 rooms, there are 16 bedroom suites and 19 full bathrooms, a great hall with massive ceilings and authentic period chandeliers, and an expansive dining room equipped to handle the largest of royal weddings.
A barrel-vaulted ballroom has a wood-burning fireplace and a dance floor, and a stately library is stocked with a collection of leather-bound books. There’s even a music room equipped with a grand piano and standing harp.
For the sportsmen in your clan, a rooftop deck with shuffleboard, sports courts and a large swimming pool offers sufficient outlet; while a horse farm and two additional residences can be found outside the walls of this southern kingdom.

To some degree, every home is the owner’s castle, but these homes take it a step further. With stone walls, turrets and even a guard shack, these residences would fit into medieval Europe, or perhaps a Harry Potter novel.
In the ivy-covered league
1 Castle Rd, Piermont, NY
For sale: $5.5 million
This castle is the oldest in the bunch, but it’s nowhere near the age of the stone monoliths found in Europe. Built in 1892 by the well-known architectural firm McKim, Mead & White, the 15,000-square-foot castle sits on 18 acres in upstate New York.
undisclosed address, Cornwall, CT
For sale: $8.85 million
According to the listing, the first owners of this home traveled throughout Europe, collecting artifacts and materials to include in their custom castle. Built in the early 1920s, the home includes columns from France and Italy and a 16th-century, painted Dutch ceiling. The entire property has 275.5 acres, which include ponds, open meadows and gardens.
1018 Mogul Hill Rd, Sandpoint, ID
For sale: $825,000
Castles in the Middle Ages were drafty and dark. This residence in Idaho proves to be otherwise with a waterproofed, insulated and steel-reinforced core that makes the castle not only “solid as a rock” but completely draft free. The residence measures 4,200 square feet with 4 bedrooms and 4 baths.
(Oh, and you have this view).
1579 Raymond Rd, Garland, NE
For sale: $695,000
The listing calls this home a “new-old” residence. Constructed in 2002, the home was actually built from plans first drafted in 1885. Nicknamed “Castle Victorian,” the residence sits on 60 acres and has 4 bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms and 3,000 square feet of living space.
2401 Portofino Ridge Dr, Austin, TX
For sale: $9.95 million
Solid copper domes top this sprawling, Mediterranean-style castle in Austin, TX. The home is located on 5.4 acres near Barton Creek Resort and Club, giving the future homeowners access to multiple golf courses, tennis courts, swimming pools and spas.

Castle in the woods
28523 Bacus Rd, Sedro Woolley, WA
For sale: $895,000
It’s not quite a moat setup, but a private bridge leads over a creek to the entrance of this stone castle. Truly a sanctuary in the woods, the castle is surrounded by 20 acres of lush forest with plenty of wildlife, promises the listing. The 1997-built castle has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
Race you to the castle
191 Degrassee Ln, Johnson City, TN
For sale: $4.3 million
What does every castle need? A modern racetrack, of course! The track in the yard of this Tennessee castle was designed to replicate the nearby Bristol Motor Speedway.
The 13-acre residence is also a replica — but of a 18th-century Spanish castle, with entry doors imported from Paris, hand-carved custom moldings and a staircase with imported marble steps.

Behold Grahall Estate, a window-lined modern fortress atop Vermont’s Hawk’s Mountain, once a corporate conference center for a human resources firm and now on the market for $2.7 million.
Found beside a pair of ponds on 10 acres in Cavendish, the medieval contemporary isn’t quite the magnitude of a Roman fortress or one of the many keeps in Eastern Europe, but it does offer a comfortable 6,500 square feet with six bedrooms and five full baths.
Royal appointments include a rooftop patio with a barbecue, custom built-ins, and fireplaces on each of the castle’s five floors; while solar panels, batteries and a propane generator allow for a certain degree of off-the-grid operation.
In a nutshell, it’s the perfect retreat for someone seeking to immerse themselves in their own “Game of Thrones” world, but with all the modern conveniences of the 21st century.
Besides its place in corporate America, the unique castle property was previously offered as an $11,000-a-month vacation rental. In addition to the home itself, the listing notes that adjacent mountainside acreage and a nearby granite quarry are also available for purchase.
Patricia Davis of Mary W. Davis Realtor & Assoc., Inc. has the listing.

The limestone ruins look ancient, like something abandoned by its residents hundreds of years ago along a misty loch in Scotland.
For sale: $179,900
The property, however, is not across the Atlantic but in upstate New York, most fittingly located in the town of New Scotland. The ruins are not as ancient, either. The home was built in 1935 by the reclusive Bouck White, a potter and Socialist activist.
Located on 4.5 acres, the property also includes a contemporary 2,500-square-foot home, but the ruins of an old castle, a pottery studio and various other outbuildings are the most intriguing selling points.
The property is available as a short sale, and listing agent Brian Bosen doesn’t mince words about the type of work it requires, saying the buyer will need to be someone “with a vision and sense of adventure.”
